Alarm thresholds

Humidity zones per coal type; triggers apply to all sites · weather refreshes every 15 min

Relative humidity zones

One bar per coal type. Each site uses the bar for its coal type (blends take the worse colour; sites with none use PRB). Click Edit to change these zones.

Peak dry-dust

Very dry coal — high dust & ignition risk

Dry-dust watch

Drying out — dust becoming likely

Normal

No humidity-driven concern

Self-heat watch

Approaching self-heating conditions

Prime self-heat

Fastest oxidation — highest self-heat risk

Moving too-rich

Moisture starting to suppress heating

Too rich

Very wet — self-heating suppressed

Temperature swing trigger

Trips when temperature changes by10°F within3hours.

Wind trigger

Trips when gusts reach25mph or sustained wind reaches12mph.

How long before a site turns red

Peak/prime humidity plus a wind or swing trigger for2hours in a row, or peak/prime humidity on its own for6hours in a row.

Shorter stretches show as Watch. Starting values are working assumptions pending expert review.

How alarms are decided

  • AlertHigh risk when RH is in the site's Prime self-heat band (PRB 60–70%, Lignite 50–60%, Bituminous 70–80%) or Peak dry dust (≤ 15%) AND (gusts ≥ 25 mph OR sustained wind ≥ 12 mph OR temperature swings ±10°F within 3 h) for 2+ hours in a row — or in those bands alone for 6+ hours in a row.
  • WatchWatch for shorter stretches in those bands, or when RH is in a watch band (dry-dust watch, or self-heat watch just below the prime band) together with a wind or swing trigger.
  • InfoMoving too-rich between the prime band and too rich; Too rich above 80% (per coal type above).
